ALFALFA PRODUCTION CALENDAR
Please help!

An Alfalfa Production Calendar is a new project for the Oklahoma Alfalfa Hay & Seed Association and several Alfalfa Extension workers. Directors at the last Board meeting thought it was a good idea and had several suggestions. The current plans are to have two formats:

1) Hard copy to hand out to producers and Ag. Agents and

2) Electronic version for the WWW and CD ROM.

The hard copy will look similar to many regular calendars with three parts --

1) A calendar with days and dates for each month.

2) Alfalfa Production Tips for the month will be reminders of important things to do and references to alfalfa production, harvesting, marketing information. Just the title and how to obtain the information will be listed on the hard copy.

3) Advertisements for products and services used in alfalfa production. It is hoped that paid advertisements in the calendar will significantly help cover the costs of production.

The electronic version will have the same information as the hard copy (probably including advertisements). Hopefully it will add a dimension to our World Wide Web Home Page. The main difference will be that the electronic version can be linked electronically to articles that will explain the tips. Users will just click their mouse on certain words in the tips and the article will appear. Other tips will take the reader to other stories or brief articles about the subject. For many topics the other tips are already written -- as articles in the NEWS from the Oklahoma Alfalfa Hay & Seed Association and Extension publications.

This is a big project, but I think it will be worth the effort for all of us involved in alfalfa. We need help from the Association members. Anyone wanting to pay for advertising space should let someone on the Board know so we can find out in general terms how many would like to sponsor a month or more, what kind of pictures advertisers may want to use, etc. Association members are also requested to share their ideas about such a project. We are in the early planning stages now but are targeting November to finish the hard copy version so that we can distribute it before January 1.

The Oklahoma Alfalfa Hay & Seed Association sponsors or co-sponsors several events each year. Hay-Day'97 as described on the previous page is an alternate-year event. In addition to our annual meeting in February or March, we have Alfalfa Expo each fall. The exact schedule of regional meetings varies somewhat from year to year. We sponsored Alfalfa Congress '96 in Cherokee last summer and co-sponsored a Forage Management College last December in Stillwater and in April this year at Hobart, to name a few.  If you would like to host an alfalfa event, contact any of the Directors.
